Blackest Night

Postby RRzero » Tue Jan 12, 2010 12:12 pm

I'm back and forth on this... I love it, I hate it... the rings were a nice touch... but why did I need an issue of Adventure Comics (other then the awesome Legion backup story) or Doom Patrol? More and more it seems like these mega-super-uber-ginormus crossovers have almost nothing but forced crossover content that does nothing that really furthers the story of the crossover or the individual titles.
I was stoked about this crossover from the time I first found out about it in the Sinestro Corps War, now I'm just waiting to be wow'd by more then just some shinny baubles...

But if you don't read the Dumb Patrol tie-in issue, you won't get the whole story! Don't you want to know how Elisti-Milf, Tin-can man, and Negative man/woman/hermaphrodite will respond the return of such dead team-mates as Girl-with-a-monkey face, transgendered melty girl, and token-black-guy-who-can-control-heat-and-cold?

I'm not sure how well it ties into the overarching story of "Blackest Night" but the Power of Shazam issue was actually a pretty good one shot story. Osiris vs Sobek, round 2, and their both dead already!

I'm really not sure how I feel about these "lost" issues. I scanned the Weird West Tales the other day and it seemed interesting, but didn't have anything that really pushed Blackest Night anywhere. I apparently need to pick up Suicide Squad as the story continues in Secret Six... which part of Secret Six's appeal was that it was somewhat autonomous from the DC universe.

How about a strawberry flavored "Frankencastle" breakfast cereal?

I've read all of the standalone resurrected series issues for Blackest Night (Catwoman, Suicide Squad, etc.) and I have to say they have all been high quality stories... but lack any connection (other then black lanterns) to Blackest Night. Some (such as Catwoman) have set up some fun things for the future of the character, others (such as the arc from Suicide Squad, which carried over to Secret Six) were used to reaffirm the characters morals, but not one thus far has been essential reading for Blackest Night readers. HOWEVER, if you have a soft spot for any of the characters or series that got the resurrection treatment, DO NOT HESITATE TO PICK THEM UP!!! They are excellent stories and your support for these lesser followed parts of the DCU will only help to see them in print again in the future.

Blackest Night, if nothing else, has reaffirmed the sheer power of 2 lesser used DC power houses Mogo and Martian Manhunter.
